Center Conway is the village along Route 302 east of Conway Village, running out toward the Maine line at Fryeburg, with Conway Lake to the south and the Saco River to the north. The old village on Route 302 and Mill Street is 1800s houses on fieldstone cellars. Redstone, just to the west, grew up around the granite quarries that shipped stone to Boston from the 1880s to the 1940s, and its housing is quarry-worker houses from that era. Conway Lake is ringed with camps from the 1930s through the 1970s, and the woods between hold 1980s and 1990s capes on wells and septic.
The Saco runs along the north edge of the village, and its floodplain reaches the low roads. The December 18, 2023 storm, which sent the river to its second-highest crest on record at Conway, put water into cellars and across Route 302 in Center Conway. Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011 had done the same. Conway Lake camps carry the winter risk. Closed from October to May, a camp with the water still on splits a pipe on a night like February 3, 2023 and runs until the owner comes up for a ski weekend.
